2nd Grade from Donna Lubin

Description

This [VoiceThread] is a version of a PowerPoint I have used for several years to introduce portraiture to 2nd grade students. I have found the fingers on the face an excellent way to have them begin to achieve proportion in their portraits. We then drew pencil portraits for practice. Redrew portraits on larger paper, then mixed skin tones (after reading Karen Katz's "The Colors of Us") and painted the rest of the picture after visiting a nearby art museum. Please see student work at - http://artsonia.com/hanscom1/.

VoiceThread notes: This VoiceThread is a great example of how a PowerPoint can be uploaded easily and used as an archive of a PowerPoint-assisted lecture, or even a supplement to a past lecture. Students reviewing the VoiceThread at home may be more inclined to ask questions or make comments that they weren't comfortable making in class. Some students who don't take notes or aren't visual learners could benefit from hearing the key points of a lecture reiterated in their teacher's voice in a VoiceThread alongside images from a PowerPoint that they remember from class. VoiceThread allows teachers to save a PowerPoint lecture in a dynamic form where they can record their voice and reiterate key concepts from the lecture. This will encourage deeper understanding of course material by helping students re-engage with the lecture topic, participate in the discussion, and recall important points from the in-class discussion.

Benefits to students

  • Students can engage in the discussion easily outside of class where they may be more inclined to speak their mind.
  • Students can go back to the VoiceThread lecture to refresh their memory of what they learned in a previous class.
  • Assists students for whom notes are little help in their recall process, and who need visual/audio means by which to study.

Process/Assignment

Ms. Lubin uploaded PowerPoint to VoiceThread tool and added comments to slides as would be spoken in lecture.

Tips

VoiceThread does not support PowerPoint special effects, so all images and text that appear on each PowerPoint slide will appear in a VoiceThread slide as one image.
